This is the part of a modern windshield replacement that gets skipped most often, and the customer generally has no way of knowing it was skipped.
What is behind your windshield
On most vehicles built in the last several years there is a forward-facing camera mounted to the glass, just ahead of the rear-view mirror. It is the eye for a set of systems collectively called ADAS — advanced driver assistance systems:
- Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning
- Traffic sign recognition
- Automatic high beam control
The camera does not measure distance directly. It infers it from where objects appear in its frame, which depends entirely on the camera being aimed exactly where the manufacturer assumed it was.
Why replacing the glass breaks that
Windshields are not fitted to sub-millimetre tolerances, and they do not need to be — except for this. Glass thickness varies slightly between parts. The urethane bead sets the glass a fraction differently. The bracket sits a fraction differently on the new glass.
None of that matters for anything except the camera, for which a fraction of a degree at the lens is metres of error at the far end of its useful range. The camera has to be told where it is actually pointing. That is calibration.
The failure mode is quiet. The car does not usually throw a warning. Lane keeping still nudges, cruise still follows, and nothing announces that the system’s model of the road is offset. It behaves normally right up until the moment it is asked to make a decision at distance.
Static and dynamic
Static calibration happens with the vehicle stationary. A target board with a manufacturer-specified pattern is positioned at an exact distance, height and lateral offset from the vehicle’s centreline. It needs level ground, space around the car and even lighting. The camera is put into a calibration mode through the diagnostic port and taught what a known target at a known position looks like.
Dynamic calibration happens driving — a sustained speed, typically on a well-marked road with clear lane lines, for a set distance while the system observes and relearns.
Which applies is set by the manufacturer. Some vehicles need static, some dynamic, and some need static followed by dynamic. Weather matters more than people expect for the dynamic half: snow-covered lane markings and heavy rain will stop a dynamic calibration completing, which in a Michigan winter is a real scheduling constraint rather than an excuse.

A sloping driveway, a tight kerbside spot or a car park with vehicles inside the target area cannot produce a valid static calibration. Being told that in advance is worth more than being told the job is done.
What a documented calibration looks like
Ask for the report. A proper calibration produces one: the vehicle identification, the systems calibrated, the procedure type, and a pass result from the scan tool. It is a short document and it is the only proof the work happened.
Keep it. If the vehicle is ever involved in a collision where an assistance system’s behaviour is examined, that report is the record showing the camera was correctly calibrated after the glass was changed.
The honest version of the cost conversation
Calibration adds meaningfully to a windshield job — often as much time again as the fitting. Customers paying out of pocket, seeing it as a separate line, quite reasonably ask whether they can skip it.
The answer is no, and the reason is not liability boilerplate. You would be choosing to drive a car whose collision avoidance system is confidently wrong about where things are. If the budget genuinely will not stretch, the right conversation is about the timing of the whole job, not about doing half of it.

Common questions
Does my car actually need this?
If it has lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, or traffic sign recognition, then yes — those run off a camera mounted to the windshield. A rough guide is model year 2018 onward for most mainstream brands, earlier on premium models, but the only reliable test is the specification for your exact vehicle and trim.
What happens if it is skipped?
The systems usually still appear to work, which is the dangerous part. There is often no warning light. A camera aimed a fraction of a degree off puts its estimate of the lane, or of the car in front, slightly out of position — and the errors are largest at distance, which is exactly where automatic braking has to make its decision.
Static or dynamic — what is the difference?
Static is done stationary, with a marked target board set at a manufacturer-specified distance and height on level ground. Dynamic is done driving, at a sustained speed on well-marked road while the system relearns. Which one is required is set by the manufacturer, not by preference, and a number of vehicles need both in sequence.
Can calibration be done at my house?
Dynamic, usually. Static, only sometimes. Why is it a separate line on the quote?
Because it is a separate operation with its own equipment and its own time, usually as long again as fitting the glass. Seeing it itemised is a good sign. Where it is absent from a quote entirely, the question worth asking is whether it is priced in elsewhere or simply not being done.
